Fenbendazole Suspension (common name Panacur®, Safe Guard®) is a broad spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic used against gastrointestinal parasites including: giardia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the taenia species of tapeworms, pinworms, It comes in a palatable white suspension. Available in 125 ml, and 1000 ml sizes. Safe-Guard can be purchased without a prescription.
Safeguard (Fenbendazole) is even effective at fighting giardia. I use it regularly when worming my dogs and many breeding kennels, rescues and shelters that use it as well because it is much more economical than Fenbendazole wormers marketed for dogs such as Panacur.
I use Pyrantel Pamoate (NEMEX-2) starting at 2 wks old and again every 2 weeks until puppies are 6 weeks old at which point I switch them to the Safe-guard dewormer (Fenbendazole) administered every 2 weeks until they’re 8 weeks old or every 2 weeks until they go home. Fenbendazole can not be started until puppies are 6wks old.
I use fenbendazole as a Giardia preventative/treatment and also because it covers a wider range of parasites. Safe-guard wormer can not be used until puppies are at least 6 weeks old BUT Pyrantel Pamoate can and SHOULD BE STARTED when puppies are 2 WKS old. I also treat my Dams at the same time. This worming protocol covers all our bases and helps us to send home parasite free puppies.
But again, I am not a Vet so please discuss your worming protocol as a breeder or dog owner with your vet.

Safety
Fenbendazole is very safe. Doses up to 100 times the recommended dose of 20 mg per pound are tolerated without serious side effects. It is also safe for use with pregnant and lactating dogs as well. An accidental overdose may cause minor vomiting and diarrhea. It is also possible that dogs might experience hypersensitivity reactions to dying parasites. If facial swelling, hives, scratching, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs or lethargy ensue, your dog may be experiencing an allergic reaction. In cases of accidental overdose or allergic reactions you should contact a veterinarian immediately.
Adult & Puppy Dosage
For best results, treat puppies at 6, 8 & 10 weeks of age. Dose for three (3) consecutive days
Newly weaned pups (6 to 8 weeks of age) should be dewormed starting at 2,4 weeks with Nemex 2 and then with Safeguard® at 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age. Treat the dam at the same time as the puppies. Dogs over six months of age should be dewormed, if not monthly, at least twice each year. Each deworming requires 3 days, Once a day OR 5 days for Giardia. Once a day.
Because the dosage for using fenbendazole in dogs is 20 mg per pound and this suspension is 100 mg of fenbendazole per 1 mL (equal to 1 cc), that means 1 mL (or 1 cc) per 5 lbs. (confirmed by my kennel’s veterinarian).
